  11. SANTA MONICA, Calif., August 13, 1991 -- Quarterdeck Office Systems,
  12. Inc. (NASDAQ: QDEK) today announced the industry's most powerful memory
  13. management and processor control program, QEMM-386 version 6.0.
  14.  
  15. The Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager-386 (QEMM-386) is an
  16. intelligent, high-performance expanded memory manager that allows
  17. automatic, or custom user-configured management of all of a personal
  18. computer's memory: conventional, expanded, extended and high memory.
  19. Version 6.0 brings additional power and capabilities to QEMM-386's
  20. Optimize program -- which automatically configures memory and loads
  21. terminate and stay resident (TSR) programs and device drivers in high
  22. memory; adds new ROM detection and utilization technology to QEMM-386 --
  23. which will deliver many PC users up to 115 kilobytes additional high
  24. memory; adds support for the "Suspend-Resume" feature common to many
  25. battery-powered laptop PCs; adds support for the Chips & Technologies
  26. SCAT Shadow RAM memory; and, gives Windows 3.0 enhanced mode users 8K -
  27. 24K more memory for DOS.

  29. "The result is a more powerful, easier to use QEMM-386 that makes
  30. available more memory than previously thought possible," said Therese
  31. Myers, Quarterdeck's president and CEO. "Version 6.0 senses memory
  32. utilization patterns and requirements and responds in a variety of new,
  33. more powerful ways. The maximum memory gain to a power user could total
  34. an additional 211K of high memory."

  36. Features new to Optimize include:
  37.  
  38.  o     The ability to process embedded batch files in a
  39.        user's Autoexec.bat file.  Previously, users wanting
  40.        Optimize to see and process TSR load statements were
  41.        required to include them directly into Autoexec.bat.
  42.        This is no longer true.  Users who like to keep their
  43.        batch files small and organized by function will find
  44.        this feature helpful;
  45.  
  46.  o     "Squeeze," a new capability that can temporarily
  47.        increase the high RAM region in high memory during a
  48.        program's load and initialization.  This feature is
  49.        helpful for programs that require more memory while
  50.        they are initializing than they do once they are
  51.        resident;
  52.  
  53.  o     Optimize now can automatically exclude portions of
  54.        high memory accessed by device drivers and TSRs.
  55.        This avoids conflicts with hardware that previous
  56.        versions failed to detect;
  57.  
  58.  o     Users can now create "response files" that QEMM-386's
  59.        LOADHI programs can use to get information about
  60.        where and how to load programs high.  This feature is
  61.        valuable for network users who load TSRs from public
  62.        batch files on the network.

  64.  o     Optimize now lets users view, browse and play with
  65.        the list of device drivers and TSRs that the program
  66.        has relocated to high-memory -- allowing users to
  67.        perform "What-if?" analyses with their memory
  68.        configuration.

  71.                        STEALTH TECHNOLOGY

  73. Additional high memory provided by QEMM-386 version 6.0 results from a
  74. new feature called Stealth. Quarterdeck's new "Stealth" technology hides
  75. a PC's ROM code, and makes its memory addresses mappable as High RAM,
  76. which is then usable for other purposes.

  78. "Stealth employs a number of strategies, applied selectively and
  79. intelligently by QEMM-386, to generate additional mappable memory," said
  80. Gary Pope, Quarterdeck's co-founder and executive vice president,
  81. development. "This important new technology, unique to QEMM-386 version
  82. 6.0, is compatible with Microsoft's Windows environment."

  84. Stealth technology is dependent upon ROM design. ROM implementations by
  85. hardware manufacturers may cause one or more of Stealth's strategies not
  86. to work.  Optimize will test a user's PC with all Stealth methods and
  87. recommend which method to use.  Optimize will only present Stealth
  88. options to users if it cannot load all TSRs or drivers in high memory.

  90. Quarterdeck's new Stealth technology works with microcomputers from IBM
  91. and Compaq Computer, as well as with a majority of DOS-based PC clones.

  94.                  BATTERY-POWERED LAPTOP SUPPORT

  96. Many of today's battery-powered computers provide a Suspend-Resume
  97. feature that allows the system to be powered up in the same state as
  98. when it was turned off -- resuming an application in use just as if
  99. there had been no interruption. QEMM-386 version 6.0 supports this
  100. feature for many popular laptops.  QEMM-386 will automatically try to
  101. detect this feature.  If a laptop system supports Suspend-Resume, but
  102. QEMM-386 does not detect it, users can instruct QEMM-386 to do so.

  105.                   ADDITIONAL SHADOW RAM SUPPORT
  106.  
  107. Earlier versions of QEMM-386 automatically detect Compaq-style Top
  108. Memory and Chips & Technologies NEAT, LEAP and AT/386 shadow RAM and
  109. make it usable as extended memory. QEMM-386 version 6.0 adds Chips &
  110. Technologies' SCAT Shadow RAM to this list.

  115.             QEMM 50/60 FOR IBM PS/2 MODELS 50 AND 60
  116.  
  117. QEMM 50/60, for 80286-based IBM PS/2s, takes advantage of the hardware
  118. capabilities of the IBM Personal System/2 80286 Memory Expansion Option,
  119. Expanded Memory Adaptor/A, or compatible memory boards to transform
  120. extended memory into expanded memory.  QEMM 50/60 version 6.0 includes
  121. the increased functionality of "Optimize," and is now compatible with
  122. popular expanded memory boards from companies including but not limited
  123. to: AST Computer, Quadram, Tecmar, Orchid, Kingston Technology and Intel
  124. Corporation.

  126. Until December 31, 1991, registered QEMM-386 and QEMM 50/60 users may
  127. upgrade, from any previous version, for a $30 fee.  QEMM-386 version 6.0
  128. will ship in early September, 1991.

  133.                       DESQview AND QRAM UPGRADED

  135. Quarterdeck's new technology will also be reflected in upgrades to
  136. DESQview-386 and QRAM.  DESQview-386 version 2.4 will provide users with
  137. access to more memory when running DOS or Windows 3.0 programs in
  138. DESQview windows. "As a result, DESQview users will be able to open much
  139. larger windows," explained Pope.  "Version 2.4 will make memory easier
  140. to use while extracting the maximum amount of memory available to DOS
  141. 5.0 users.  Additionally, network managers will find DESQview and QRAM
  142. to be easier to set-up, with more powerful support for multiple network
  143. communications packages."  Included in DESQview 386 v2.4 are special
  144. NETBIOS and Novell IPX/SPX drivers, to be used when running several
  145. network-specific programs via network gateways or when running
  146. client/server network application programs.

  148. DESQview users will be able to upgrade to DESQview 2.4 for a fee of $25,
  149. until December 31, 1991.  DESQview-386 users will be able to upgrade for
  150. a $50 fee.  New versions of DESQview will ship in early September.

  152. QRAM version 2.0 organizes and allocates memory resources on 808x and
  153. AT-style 286 machines.  QRAM provides users of this class of machine,
  154. when equipped with EMS 4.0 or EEMS memory, the capacity to load programs
  155. into high memory.  New to QRAM version 2.0 are the appropriate features
  156. of the upgraded "Optimize"; and, compatibility with the Chips and
  157. Technologies SCAT shadow RAM chipset. Registered users of QRAM will be
  158. able to upgrade to QRAM 2.0, also shipping in September, for a fee of
  159. $25.  Users of any Quarterdeck product included in this upgrade that
  160. purchased their copies after August 19, 1991, will be able to upgrade at
  161. no charge.
